Stephen Jenner, Deputy Head Corporate Training, British Council India, poses this question as one of the parallel speakers for the Session ‘Meeting the Recruitment Challenge’.

Stephen stresses the need for a global benchmarking tool and suggests the CEF, or rather ‘CF’ as it is more commonly being referred to.

Stephen summarises the BPO recruiter’s daily challenge:
1. I need people with good English, but what does that mean?
2. What exactly are the communication skills I need for this specific process?
3. What do I do with borderliners?
4. How do I transform new recruits into first class employees?

We would love to hear your ideas, suggestions and answers to these questions! Keep your comments coming in…

1. I need people with good English, but what does that mean?
Probably, one who doesn’t ask: What’s your good name? And where are you put up?

2. What exactly are the communication skills I need for this specific process?
Listening skills more than any other.

3. What do I do with boderliners?
I think in India written communication is better than spoken. So borderliners can be the guys providing written support.

4. How do I transform new recruits into first class employees?
Like in schools, compulsory tests and exams on communication (task based) to keep the job.
Communicative games and activities.

Dear Philip,

I will try answering these questions..

1. I need people with good English, but what does that mean?

People who can articulate their thoughts well when talking to customers are good communicators. Good English isn’t, strictly speaking, correct usage of grammar, or great vocabulary. It is more about building rapport, customer centricity, cultural sensitization, and empathizing.

2. What exactly are the communication skills I need for this specific process?

Business etiquette tops the charts..followed by empathy and acknowledgment.

3. What do I do with boderliners?

Depends on how you define a borderliner..A borderliner can either be given intensive refresher trainings on developmental areas or redeployed to a role s/he fits best into.e.g a person not good at call taking can be redeployed to a non-calling job.

4. How do I transform new recruits into first class employees?
New recruits should be groomed well during the induction program . They should be made aware of the code of conduct, the business policies, and cultural orientation is a MUST. The organization has it’s own culture, which the new recruits should get initiated to.
Hope this made sense 🙂

Cheers,
AB

Definition of Employability

Although there are many definitions of employability, for the purposes of Workforce Plus the Executive has adopted the following definition:

“…the combination of factors and processes which enable people to progress towards or get into employment, to stay in employment and to move on in the workplace.”
